Renewable Freedom

A pathway to economic stability, energy security and a liveable future

Renewable Freedom is already a reality. Across countries, companies and communities, clean energy systems are delivering more stable prices, stronger economies and greater resilience to global fossil fuel shocks.

This report brings together evidence and real-world examples from across regions, grounded in Planetary Boundaries science. It outlines the urgency of accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels and highlights what is already working.

    • Fossil fuel dependence continues to drive economic instability, with recent crises pushing oil prices up by more than 40% and increasing cost-of-living pressures worldwide.

    • The transition is accelerating, with more than two thirds of global energy investment now flowing into renewables. Renewable energy is becoming a central driver of economic resilience, supporting more stable prices and reducing exposure to global fuel markets.

    • Despite this progress governments continue to spend at least $2.6 trillion each year on planetary harmful subsidies, including $1.05 trillion for fossil fuels, slowing the transition and reinforcing dependence on volatile systems.

    • Aligning policy, finance and governance with planetary boundaries can accelerate the transition and strengthen long-term economic stability.

  • The Planetary Guardians are calling on governments, industry, and citizens to act:

    • Governments: join COFFIS (the Coalition on Phasing Out Fossil Fuel Incentives Including Subsidies) and commit to transparent subsidy inventories and time-bound phase-out plans; redirect public finance toward renewable energy and grid infrastructure; finance the transition in the Global South; and support the COP30 Presidency's roadmaps to phase out fossil fuels and protect forests.

    • Companies: transition operations to renewable energy, advocate for the removal of harmful subsidies that distort markets against clean energy, and invest in the workforce and skills the transition demands.

    • Citizens: demand that their governments publish transparent transition plans, support the Fossil Fuel Treaty, and ask one simple question: how much of my taxes are supporting fossil fuel company profits, and what are you doing about it?
