Statement on COP30

COP30 must protect the stability of Earth’s two richest biomes – the Amazon rainforest and the tropical coral reefs

On Nature and Biodiversity Day, with only 5 days left until the end of COP30, scientists and civil society came together to urge Heads of Delegation to deliver real roadmaps for life. The call is clear: decisions in Belém must be grounded in the best available science and aligned with the needs of people and planet.

This morning we hosted a press conference in front of the Amazonas Plenary in the Blue Zone, where Scientists Johan Rockström and Ricarda Winkelmann joined Planetary Guardians Mary Robinson, Naoko Ishii, Carlos Nobre and Juan Manuel Santos to present the statement to global media. Their collective message underscored that safeguarding nature and biodiversity is central to stabilizing the Earth system and protecting communities worldwide.

Following the press conference, the group met directly with key COP30 decision-makers to reinforce the urgency of action. These included Ana Toni (COP30 CEO), Marina Silva (Brazilian Minister of Environment and Climate Change), Andre Correa do Lago (COP President), Geraldo Alckmin (Vice President of Brazil), Simon Stiell (UNFCCC Executive Secretary), Ed Miliband (UK Secretary of State for Climate), Wopke Hoekstra (EU Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth) and Katie White (Minister for Climate, UK).
